Sumidero Canyon
The deep caverns of the Sumidero Canyon are ideal places to stimulate the imagination and refresh the spirit, and the rock formations with their mystical figures are truly impressive yet at the same time graceful and delicate. The Grijalva River passes through the Canyon on its tireless journey to the Gulf of Mexico.
  History.
  The name comes from the word Chiapas Chiapan or Tepechiapan
  The conquerors, founding cities in the region, Chiapas of the Indians and the Spanish Chiapas.
  The first inhabitants settled in the territory, dedicated to gatheringand hunting

SOCIAL ASPECTS.
  In the late 20th century, indigenous peasant farmers grew discontented with the Mexican government for having long given less attention to their poor and largely agricultural region than they preferred. A chief complaint was that many indigenous farmers were required to pay absentee landlords, despite repeated government promises of agrarian reform.
